Fun Night Monday January 9th at 6:00PM - Mr Mom

After he burst off the screen in Night Shift, Michael Keaton was given his first leading role in this film. He plays Jack Butler who designs and builds cars for a big Detroit auto maker.

Due to cutbacks, he is laid off from his job. His wife, played by Teri Garr, has been a housewife to their three kids and hasn't worked in years. Jack and her make a bet as to who will get a job first.

Of course she does and Jack is forced to stay at home and watch the kids. He obviously has no idea how tough the job is and the film goes through his transformation from an inept house dad to a growing into the role.

Some hilarious scenes include a trip to the supermarket gone awry, Jack's addiction to soap operas and his confrontations with his wife's smug boss played with oily charm by Martin Mull.

Teri Garr is very funny as is Ann Jillian as her best friend. The real star is of course Mr. Keaton, who shows he cannot only be funny, but touching and caring. a first rate performance.

Fun Night Monday December 12th at 6:00PM - Miracle on 34th Street

What an interesting find! I didn't know this version existed, and it seems that for many decades nobody else did either. Although it is Black and White it is fun to watch.

It is a snappy 46 minute version made for television in the 1950s, closely modeled on the 1947 movie. It was never intended to be preserved beyond that one showing.

For such a fleeting almost throwaway product, I am very impressed with the care taken with its production and the excellent casting.

I'm not saying it is "better" than full length movie versions of the story, but it is a

well done TV version.

I can't really call it an adaptation as it so closely copies the film version. I suppose television at this time was still finding its own place is the entertainment industry and experimenting with its relationship to feature films.

How great that the Library of Congress unearthed the only copy of this production and we're able to see it after so long lost.

Fun Night Wednesday October 12th at 6:00PM - Night Shift

This early Ron Howard effort is somewhat forgotten in the aftermath of his big-budget hits that have come in the last decade. That is too bad, because this is probably Howard's best comedy and it is one of the funniest movies you will ever see.

The story centers on Chuck Lumley (played by Henry Winkler), a nebbish who works at the city morgue after leaving his high powered finance job due to stress. Chuck is a loser who cannot face up to any kind of bully, including his fiance. After being relegated to the night shift, Chuck is teamed with a morgue new-comer, Bill Blazejowski (Michael Keaton at his maniacal best). Bill, who likes to be called Billy Blaze, is "an idea man". When Chuck's prostitute next-door neighbor (Shelly Long) loses her pimp, Bill's new idea is to use the morgue to run a call-girl ring. Doesn't sound funny? Well, trust me, it is hilarious.

Keaton steals the show with his over-the-top performance. His high-energy comedy is the perfect contrast to Winkler's nerdy Chuck. Winkler, in a departure at the time from his Happy Days role as the Fonze, is also dryly funny. The supporting cast (most of whom made their mark on t.v., not movies) is also fantastic. The prostitutes, lead by Long, combine looks and humor. Richard Belzer (Homocide), Pat Corley (Murphy Brown), Gina Hecht (Mork and Mindy) and Derek Munoz (Freaks and Geeks) are among those who provide memorable moments in small roles. Clint Howard as usual has a role in his brother's film and is very funny as a loser who employees the services of Chuck and Bill.
And, as a previous reviewer noted, this movie is ripe with great, quotable movie lines.

Fun Night Thursday September 1st at 6:00PM - Mamma Mia

From what I know of the history of this play/movie the two ladies that worked so
hard to get ABBA and others to put this together in GB are now two of the wealthiest
women in England - and from what I have seen it drives the critics nuts, ("lousy,
bad camera work, Brosnen can not carry a tune etc., etc.,) the bottom line folks,
this movie fits like that old comfortable shirt your wife (the critic) wants you to
throw away because it looks "awful". Well, the heck with em, I like my shirt, and I
like meatloaf and mashed potatos, and I like Mama Mia, maybe it is mind candy,
maybe it does not reach the high brow standard, but it "feels good" so the pundants
can take their "expert" advise and put it where "the sun don't shine", this movie
makes me smile and who knew Meryl Streep could sing like that - the "Winner
Takes it All" maybe very poorly filmed according to the so called experts because
the one I saw said "get me off the Merry-go-Round" but it sure sent chills down my
back - let the experts rave - I know what I like, and this film made me laugh - in times
like these I will take that any old time over what the high brows think I should see!

Fun Night Monday November 14th at 6:00PM - Batteries Not Included

A sentimental little beauty from Spielberg

This 1987 little sentimental ditty was utterly irresistible to the public, even as
critics panned it as too schmaltzy. It concerns a squadron of little UFOs who
arrive on the room of a NY apartment building, one which is about to be razed
as soon as the owners can manage to evict the quirky bunch of tenants. The tenants
include Hume Cronin and Jessica Tandy (always and forever a winning pair) as well
as a guy who plays a mentally (or emotionally - or maybe both) disabled man who
speaks only in set phrases from commercials or TV jingles or product tags, such
as that of the title: Batteries Not Included. As the tenants band together to save
the lives of the little aliens, including a spine-tingling scene in which one gives birth,
the aliens come to the rescue of the folks in danger of eviction - and the tenants,
previously a disparate bunch, come together to form a community.Heartwarming.
Great family entertainment

Elvis Presley Live from Memphis at 7:00pm

This 1997 show and the 2001 show in Memphis. They were great. This DVD captures the essence of the "Elvis the Concert" shows and does so with great sound and in great picture. Honestly, watching it is very close to being there in person. Elvis never sounded better. It's great seeing Elvis players together again and as brilliant as ever. This is a great release. Thank you EPE for putting it together and finally releasing it to the public. What strikes you is just how timeless Elvis and his music really is. No other singer could do a show like this and seem as fresh and modern as Elvis does. This DVD won't disappoint. Elvis lives!

Elvis Presley Aloha from Hawaii -Next 8:00PM

This Deluxe Edition DVD features pretty much everything you could ask for in regards to Elvis Aloha from Hawaii. You get the staged footage of Elvis arriving in Hawaii and greeting fans. You get the complete rehearsal concert that was taped two days before the live broadcast. Elvis shows more energy here than in the broadcast concert, but he forgets more of the lyrics and sings two less songs. You get the complete Aloha from Hawaii Concert, which has been re-edited from scratch. The show was originally broadcast with quite a bit of "montage" footage, which means multiple images from the concert seen on the screen all at once in video blocks, but almost all of those effects were removed from this version. After the concert, Elvis recorded five songs on stage with no audience, which were inserted into the concert and played with montage footage of Hawaii. The complete footage of that recording session is here, complete with all takes of each song, with no footage of Hawaii. Finally, the original broadcast version of Elvis Aloha from Hawaii is included

Rather than put his client's injured horse down, Ben adopts her and welcomes Cale into the family business. They train Soñador to race again as grouchy but kind-hearted Grandpa (Kris Kristofferson) lends his encouragement.
